Obituary for Helen "Beryl" Gregory (Wolfe)

GRAFTON – A funeral service will be held for Helen Beryl Wolfe Jacobs Gregory, 100 years of age, at Blueville United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, January 26, 2019, with burial at Woodsdale Cemetery, Grafton, West Virginia. Mrs. Gregory passed away Monday, January 21, 2019. Born in Fellowsville, West Virginia on January 5, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Clinton Marcellis Wolfe and Dora Knotts Wolfe. She was a member of Blueville, Methodist Church.
Beryl grew up in Fellowsville with her sisters Ruby, Opal and Mary Jo. The girls often worked in their father’s store, Clint Wolfe’s General Mercantile where they enjoyed greeting the customers.
Beryl was on the school basketball team and was also a cheerleader in high school. She met her future husband when his visiting basketball team played at her high school and he asked her to hold his watch during the game. Beryl and Jack Jacobs eloped and built a life for themselves in Grafton where they ran the Jacobs Market. Beryl served as a teaching assistant for home economics and in the library. She was an expert seamstress and quilter with most of her creations becoming treasured family heirlooms. She loved gardening and was prolific with canning. Her culinary talents were cherished by her family, especially her homemade applesauce. After retirement, Beryl traveled with her sisters, “The Golden Girls” far and wide. She journeyed by plane, train, car, bus, boat, and even helicopter. She was always up for an adventure with a quick wit and a kind heart. And she never allowed herself to be too old to have fun. She loved playing all kinds of games and was highly competitive! She has resided in Irmo, SC, for the last 4 years and marked her 100th birthday with a celebration attended by all of her family and friends, including her 93 year old “baby” sister. She was a woman of tremendous faith, making time to read her daily devotional and bible. She sang in the church choir into her 90’s and was a member of the UMCW and the Retired Teacher’s Union.
Surviving are her son, David Lee Jacobs (Shirley); daughter, Sandra Burdett (Jack); grandchildren, David Lee Jacobs, II, Jamie Jacobs, Mike Jacobs, Darlene Follin, Kimberly Gillespie, John Burdett, Jr., and Clint Burdett; and many, many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and her sister, Mary Jo Bailey.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, James Warner Jacobs, and her second husband, Frank Gregory, her sisters Ruby Thomas and Opal Walter.
The family will receive friends at the Donald G. Ford Funeral Home in Grafton on Friday, January 25th from 4:00-9:00 p.m. and from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Funeral service will be held at the Blueville United Methodist Church on Saturday, January 25, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor John Flynn officiating.
Interment will follow at the Woodsdale Memorial Park Cemetery in Grafton.
A memorial service for Beryl will be held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, in Columbia, SC, at a future date and time to be determined.
